Sad Train

Death on Amtrak train kept secret for about 1,000 miles to avoid shipping cost

I often find pleasure in the quirky and offbeat, but there was something ineffably sad and touching in this story that I clicked on with lighter intentions.

I think of how incredibly alone she must have felt, saying goodbye to her father in a strange place so far from home. Even as the calendar confirms another hot, sunny summer day, I picture a gloomy and harsh darkness with swirling snow outside the window of the train car as the wheels click off the miles. I try to imagine the frustration of being unable to afford to do the proper thing -- and if I'm honest, I understand the desire to hold the truth at bay a bit longer.
Comments:
That's sad, but kinda sweet too. It's like Faulker's As I Lay Dying, just way less morbid, I hope.
